Brunette vs. Blonde — Which Color Actually Suits You?

Undertones, eye color, lifestyle. A colorist's honest guide to whether your best hair is brunette, blonde — or somewhere in between.

The blonde-vs-brunette debate almost always comes down to three things: your undertones, your eye color, and how much maintenance you actually want.

Cool vs. warm undertones

Cool undertones (pink, red, or bluish under the skin) usually flatter cooler colors — ash blondes, cool brunettes, espresso. Warm undertones (yellow, gold, peach) come alive in honey blondes, caramel brunettes, and coppers.

Eye color

Blue and grey eyes pop against warm brunettes and honey blondes. Brown and hazel eyes shine with cool blondes and rich chocolate tones. Green eyes love copper and auburn.

Maintenance reality

Blonde requires a gloss every 6–8 weeks, purple shampoo weekly, and root work every 8–12 weeks. Brunette is far more forgiving — full color 2–3× a year is often enough.
